It was installed by the gas company and it has fail safe features. We never use it unattended and it will auto cut off if the thermostat reaches a certain point. It has less danger than a space heater which are common in the south
I understand that concern and my family members are a bit leery as well. We really don't use it that often since the temps are seldom under 50 degrees. :)
