Most religions - not all (and that's worth some discussion itself) - seem to go through various periods of intolerance. Right now, it's Muslims. A few centuries ago, Christianity did similar things.
"How nice things would be without religions" sounds good on the surface. "South Park" did a show on this where Cartman went to an atheist future, and found constant warfare among factions of atheists. Keep in mind that the Marxist nations are officially atheist, and their death toll exceeds that from any other philosophy in human history.
Muslims aren't the problem. Fanatics are the problem.
