For once, the problem's not DamnTikiWiki. The problem is that the DamnApache Web server has to be restarted to get new configuration settings to load. Each time I do that, the server forgets your previous login, and you have to log in again.
I knew it was only a matter of time before Zoners got pissed-off enough to call me on it. I'm sorry, but there's really nothing I can do beyond cursing the Apache developers.
And then there's the way that clicking on a post opens a new window. That's my response to another poorly-designed feature of DamnTikiWiki: It doesn't produce nice, efficient, HTML pages that the server can just shoot out to you. DamnTikiWiki laboriously builds each page from scratch each time, even if it hasn't changed in weeks. If clicking on a subject line in the tree changed the current window to the message, coming back to the tree would force it to be created from scratch yet again, and I just don't think the server can handle the load of that many pages being built that often. You'd notice the slowdown.
This is why, long term, I have to replace the forum backend on the server as well as the frontend. It's too damn inefficient. Every time the tree TOC is built, it requires one database search for every message in the tree, to find any replies to that message; and then searching for replies to replies, ad nauseum. That's insane. My old design built the tree once in XML, edited it only when it changed, and produced simple HTML output that the server can handle with the utmost efficiency.
Lotta words to say it ain't gonna change any time soon.
