i don't think there's any question this lunatic's radical islamic religion played the central role in his murder spree. but don't you think it would be irresponsible to fan the flames of bigotry and start an anti-muslim backlash? it would be just as irresponsible to start an anti-fundamentalist christian campaign just because one bombed an abortion clinic. i think the press is handling this very responsibly, rather than giving bubba what he wants, an excuse to string 'em all up.
there are many muslims in america, most of them not involved in politics or jihadism, and muslims in the military play a very important role as translators, and as examples to her enemies of american tolerance and liberty. the last thing the usa needs now is an anti-muslim backlash, especially one that might lead to violence or violation of civil liberties. this is not a liberal vs conservative talking point. it's just common sense.
even president bush, to his credit, never played that card.
