I think the difference is that the keys you are talking about prevent people from getting into other people's property. The "key" I'm talking about keeps me from working with my own property.
I suspect that some rather edgy tech design on the brand new high-power MacBook Pro batteries made Apple understandably nervous about liability issues, and they don't want these batteries floating around outside the case where some idiot could do something to blow himself up.
