I'm not sure that Mars went "wrong". Earth almost certainly had an equally exciting early history with numerous giant impacts, but because Earth genuinely IS in the Habitable Zone, life was reborn on Earth.
Mars has probably always been too cold for surface life, except in the aftermath of some of those giant impacts - they might actually be the BEST trhing that ever happened to life on Mars!
