I'm thinking that there are two basic choices for a society that chooses its leaders by vote to succeed over the long run: either you have to restrict who can vote, or you have to reduce government power to the point where lunatics and idiots can do only limited damage. I have no idea how you would do the former, so what's wrong with the latter?
