HTML vs. plain text
Sounds like your parents sent the message formatted in HTML, with images inline. Then, somewhere along the way, it was converted to plain text.
In all cases the images are attachments, but in HTML format there's an internal URL identifying which attachment to display inline. Strip out the HTML, and what's left is that pointer to the attachment.
