Solar Flares
It's widely known that an EMP attack or severe solar flare could wreak havoc with modern electronic and power distribution systems. Some information here, and a complete report can be found here.
So are we preparing? Are our power suppliers and information networks hardening their systems? Installing breakers? Backup plans?
Hah. Not so's you'd notice it.
It's obvious that we don't do much about things like this until we've gotten our noses really bloodied, and many times not even then.
