Congrats to the Japanese.

I thought it would be an American light sail
that would be the first to be propelled by light through deep-space.
That's what I thought for some 40 years.
I was wrong, it's the Japanese who get this space first.
Congratulations to JAXA, if that is the appropriate
Japanese Space Agency.

Now America'S space programs have a chance to redeem themselve's by being the first to use plasma propulsion in deep space, perhaps within ten years.

From an article in Scientific American, I understand
you can get Specific Impulses as high as 2000 seconds
with plasma propulsion, but it requires 50 kilowatts
of power to generate one pound of thrust.
