At least in the particular case of the accidental shooting. The helicopter footage did not reveal any military capability or troop activity that was not already widely known.

That being said, I don't know if this incident was being ignored, and needed the exposure to force an investigation, or whether it was already under investigation and the exposure served no additional purpose other than making political hay.

I have heard people claim that since the enemy already probably knows all our military secrets, nothing should be secret, but that seems to be along the lines of assuming that since crooks know how to break and enter, there's no point in having any locks on our doors.
