Re: America's Ruling Class--And the Perils of Revolution

The article gets off to a very good start, but soon degenerates into the predictable right wing screed: if the liberals would just go away and let REAL Amurrican values take over, everything would just be wunnerful. Of course, guess who gets to decide what real American values are? I suspect folks like me don't qualify.

As the first few paragraphs point out quite effectively before the harangue swings hard-a-starboard, the real issue is not ideology, it is the nature of politics and power and the realities of class struggle. The right's constituency is the rich, the left's, the poor, and they both compete in lying like a sonofabitch to the middle class, which is so greedy and stupid that they will follow anyone or anything that promises to cut taxes and create more cushy office jobs. The fact that the middle class has been shrinking in relative terms for the last half-century, (primarily due to its own excesses), and only survives propped up by government, corporate, and consumer borrowing; seems to be lost on them as long as a fresh supply of scapegoats is always available.

Let us just be very wary of all this cavalier talk of revolution. Revolution inevitably leads to dictatorship, and Fascism is the dictatorship of the middle class. For them, Fascism is wonderful, everybody has a job, crime goes down, and the trains run on time. The only exception to this rule I can think of is the American Revolution of the 18th century, but I see nothing or no one in the contemporary political landscape that leads me to believe we can pull that off again.
