Lee's just dating himself. That's all old stuff. Modern desensitizing (and I don't really have a problem with it) is happening today in popular young people's shows like Buffy and Torchwood. Right now I believe it's at the same cultural stage as race used to be years ago when "hip" academics and cultural icons used to invite minorities to their parties to show how cool they were. I watched cartoons with my kids a few years back, and teenage superheroes were all colors. White guys had black girlfriends and vice versa, and nobody in the show gave a crap. We've come a long way since Captain Kirk kissed Lt. Uhura.
When things settle down years from now, "gay" won't be either "hip" or "an abomination" any more, just something that makes little more cultural difference than hair color.
The marriage thing is primarily political and used as a political weapon, much as race too often still is.
