Do you trust Environmentalist groups?

Two articles here, one from AP and one from "The New American"

AP
^The groups had argued in their petition that millions of animals are dying from eating lead-shot pellets or carcasses contaminated by lead. They said an estimated 10 million to 20 million birds and other animals die each year from lead poisoning in the U.S^

10 to 20 million? That's not a range, that's a wild-ass guess.

TNA
^10 to 20 million animals died each year from lead poisoning, either by being shot or by being eaten by another animal after having been shot. Other petitioners included Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility, the Association of Avian Veterinarians, and Project Gutpile.^

I can't figure out if AP cleaned up the first statement because of how ludicrous the second one sounds, or if TNA is editorializing.

Research collected by the Wisconsin Bird Conservation Initiative:

Average yearly bird kill from environmental lead-
~pre~
5 Loons
2.5 Trumpeter Swans
2.55 Bald Eagles
1991 200-300 Canada Geese (someone forgot to count)
~/pre~
The geese were poisoned by grazing on a former Trap and Skeet range.

I seriously doubt Wisconsin is some type of statistical outlier…
