Our government has devolved to what governments have mostly been throughout history: an engine for looting the productive and passing the loot to their cronies and supporters to gain and keep power.

The public education system is part of the problem. Every line in that article tells us that politics and spreading the loot to various unions and cronies is far more important to the education bureaucracy than actually educating the children.
