Geek Speak

Bah...

Came down this morning and found my main computer had crashed good and hard. A little cursor line gently blinking on a black screen. CTL-ALT-DEL still worked, but it wouldn't boot until I went in and dinked with the boot order in the core system. I have no idea why that worked, or should have worked. Maybe it was just ready to start anyway.

It's purring away over there in Safe Mode, running diagnostics, and I'm typing this on one of my two backup computers. I think everything's okay, but I'd love to know what happened. Event logs are cryptic to the point of being almost useless. My big fear was that my C Drive had bit the big one.

All my D Drive data is safe in many locations, but the weak links are my C Drives, where all my applications and settings live (I have always kept data and applications on separate drives when I could). The C Drive is the product of months - even years - of installations and growth. When one of those crashes, it's gone, and I would have to re-install all my crap. I've done it before, sometimes just to clean out all the smeg Windows accumulates over the years, but it sucks.

I'm going to have to pick up Ghost and some kind of backup drive just for disk images.
