IMO, and this is just my opinion although a pretty educated one, is that yes, a multivitamin will suffice IF (and that's a big IF!) you are ALREADY in optimal health. That means also you eat a balanced diet getting all the grains, fruits, veggies, fiber, etc., etc. that your body needs plus all the exercise it needs, etc., etc.
Damn few of us ARE in optimal health. Also, ANYONE (and this means YOU, my dear) who smokes needs to take a lot of Vitamin C. Smoking washes Vitamin C out of your body.
Linus Pauling was a famous researcher who touted taking mega doses of C for heart health. The men in his family ALL died at early ages (their 40's if I remember correctly) of heart disease. When Pauling finally died at 93 (of prostate cancer--he should have also been supplementing with Zinc, E and Selenium π), they autopsied him as per his orders and found his arteries were as clean as a new-born babes! Low Vitamin C levels may be why smokers die of heart attacks. I quit smoking 14 years ago but I still take 2,000 mg of C a day. Down from 4,000 when I smoked.
As problems popped up over the years, doctors put me on vitamin or mineral supplements specific to those health issues. The question is, do we need to continue supplementing for the rest of our lives and that question has not been answered as far as I know. To be safe, I continue. I am probably the healthiest person with all my health problems you'll ever meet. π What that means is this: had I NOT been taking the things I take, I would bet I would be dead right now. I.E. I take CoQ10 which is a naturally occurring co-enzyme found in the heart. It increases blood oxygenation. They were surprised to find, that, in spite of my sleep apnea, my oxygenation levels are very high and very satisfactory.
I hope that answers your question.
