If you haven't read Pellegrino's Return to Sodom and Gomorrah, you might get a kick out of it. Deals partly with the idea that some ancient civilizations may have been quite a bit more technologically advanced than is commonly thought.
(EDIT: well, speculates that there may have existed one ancient civilization may have been quite advanced.)
Pellegrino's an entertaining writer...perhaps a better writer than scientist, though.
