What you've just described sounds like my past ten years on the web. Some stuff out there can be ridiculously hard to find, but in the end, it's worth it to have that extra bit of info.
And considering the newer tactics you have suggested, maybe I should email the authors of that journal. Be worth it to give it a shot.
