Actually, they were both asses, but for very different reasons. The point I'm trying to make is that non-scientific or psychological questions cannot be attacked or defended with scientific reasoning, any more than emotional or artistic ones can be decided by appeals to laboratory technique. And that certainly holds for social issues, such as economics or politics. For example, although I haven't the slightest doubt in my mind biological evolution occurs, and similar selection processes can be inferred in other complex systems, we should never use the prestige and demonstrated consistency of Darwinism to justify policies like racial superiority, Lebensraum, eugenics or laissez-faire capitalism. If you want that as part of your society, you need to convince people some other way.
