Okay, if I'm so damned "free," how about letting me out of the program? I'll even let them keep all the money they've gotten from me so far.* How about it?
*According to my last Social Security statement, a grand total of about $116,761 since 1970. According to this basic interest calculator, had this been averaged out and invested weekly (around $73 bucks) at a lousy 6 percent, that would now be about $320,000. At the 10 percent the stock market has averaged, it would be about $724,000 by now. If I retired at 66, continuing to put the money in at the same rate, the 6 percent fund would be at $1.2 million, and the 10 percent fund would be on the close order of $5.6 million.
The Social Security system is promising me $1,632 a month at age 66. You do the math, and then tell me what a big favor the government is doing me.
