Re: Scientific knowledge is needed for responsible governing

I'm not laughing either, Bowser.

We are being asked every day to make policy on many areas of scientific importance, like global warming, nuclear power, genetic engineering, gasoline components, electric cars, and dozens of others.

A responsible voter should know at least enough basic science so that he can't be pulled around by the nose by whatever interest group can feed him the most plausible bullshit.

...What bothers Pollak the most is the finding that only about a third of adults showed a good understanding of the scientific process.

These people are not just ignorant of facts, they can't THINK.

Considering that most kids who came out of one-room schoolhouses decades ago could probably answer these questions just fine (the ones that were known back then), this says a hell of a lot about how our government education system has "progressed." It is worth noting that much of our current civilization came from such schoolhouses.

If a private company contracted to educate your children and they came out this butt-stupid, you would fire them with such enthusiasm that they would be almost clear across the street before they hit the asphalt. At what point do we tell our socialist education bureaucracy, "enough?"

A cynic might say that an ignorant, credible boob that will believe any horse manure a politician tells him is probably the ideal voter, and maybe the education system is doing exactly what it's supposed to. All they have to make sure is that the voting machines are simple enough for the moron to use.
