Apparently engine selection for the Merlin Coupe is still up in the air. I asked them if a diesel version would be available, but the response suggested most probably a gasoline engine would be used.
I don't know what the reasoning is really. If you are willing to go as far as to build a unique one-seat commuter car to achieve a quantum leap in fuel economy, why not use a diesel engine too, so that you get better efficiency, and higher torque for towing a small cargo trailer occasionally. I guess it's possible it hasn't occurred to them, but I find it hard to believe.
