Upon first blush it does seem outrageous, but then I kept reading (gotta stop doing that, it makes things ever so much more complicated!) and found this in the same article:
“No one should be surprised when an administration makes changes like this,” [HHS spokesman William] Pierce said. “I don’t think there is anything going on here that has not gone on with each and every administration since George Washington.”
So the pendulum swings. I suppose it's a risk a scientist runs when he/she fails to ensure they are at least an arm's length away from politics...
