I was wondering less how the equipment could have failed than how he could have managed to stay away from the shore that long. One would think you would almost have to work at it.
I have since learned that there are currents in this area that would tend to pull a drifting boat southward parallel with the coast a good distance, so maybe it's not as weird as I originally thought.
