Religion brought litteracy, the arts, music , architecture, and education (schools) centuries ago.
Oddly enough, it's also religion that brought the critical spirit (Edict of Nantes), as various viewpoints were emerging and trying to be heard.
de las Casas for instance, understood the Natives had rights like us.
