It is scary. Not sure it's a "Weimar moment", in that I don't think Paul is actually scheming to take over...or even expecting to be the Republican nominee, let alone President. But I can't forget the Butterfly Effect: In a chaotic system such as American politics this year, the tinest perturbation can cause the system to flip into an unexpected yet stable state. Ron Paul might be most surprised of all if circumstances make him the Republican nominee or even...oh god, I can't even say the "P" word in conjunction with his name. But you know what I mean.
I've heard about the controversy Tom brings up, and I'm sure that one'll get an exhaustive airing should Paul start looking like a serious contender/threat. So far only the one source has pushing the story for years, so I'll reserve judgment for now.
It's possible that Paul's extremism (undoubted) is being exaggerated even further. To his credit, he clearly cringed and disagreed when the crowd yelled "let him die" in answer to the debate qauestion about the uninsured patient; there are limits even to Ron Paul's villainy.
