Posting "past" you

You're right - a lot of that wasn't directly germane to what you said. But in this public forum I tend not to write solely for an audience of one. And since I was invoking history, I figured some people needed a bit more than you most likely did.

Call it a "pre-emptive strike" ;-)

As for your actual point: it does seem that way, sometimes - certain nations' oppressions of their own people are ignored, and others' are excoriated. Used to happen in US foreign affairs, too - remember the Shah of Iran? Sukarno? Ferdinand Marcos? Favored nation trade status for China? Armed support of Saddam Hussein during the Iran/Iraq war?

Sarcasm aside... part of your answer is in Mary Anne's post just below mine: those who claim to live to a higher standard ought not to complain about being judged by it. I think another part of your answer comes from a limited range of input... listen harder, and in more varied places, and you may hear complaints about the treatment Muslim countries give their own people. Start with Amnesty International.
