There are more men in the West with two nickels to rub together who are not necessarily connected to either the government or the Mob.

Women are much more the practical sex; any woman who would market herself as a mate is nothing if not practical. If a woman is looking for a lover, she will go for romance; if she's looking for a potential father for her children, odds are better she will look for a provider. Provider means food, clothing, shelter, and safety. Safety includes his own temperament as well as protection from outside threats.

Men are drawn by youth, beauty, health, and sometimes intelligence (though not always). The first two are characteristics that dating services can market easily, with a camera. Men can also be drawn to women who appear to need rescuing, you romantic, impractical people you. But that's part of your charm. ;)

Some of these matches work, but many others fail in the long run because the cultural differences are too great.

I know a couple of women from abroad who married American men only to discover the men wanted women who were less "uppity" (that is to say, independent) than American women. As soon as the mail-order brides began to think for themselves and become less abjectly dependent, the honeymoon was over. But that's a different wrinkle.
