One day, a man who showed obvious signs of being browbeaten in times past was at the wheel of his automobile that was traveling at a sensible and legal speed of 30mph on a highway.
Suddenly, he saw a police car pull up behind him, and he started to panic.
The guy, showing obvious fright, started to apply more foot-pressure on the accelerator, picking up speed quickly.
He got to 40mph, but the police car
still kept close behind.
He reached 50mph, the police car only
got closer.
Totally alarmed, the guy, put the pedal-to-the-metal, and his car accelerated to 70, 80, 90 and finally
110mph.
By this time, the police car, which
had kept pace, had its lights flashing
and sirens wailing.
Wisely, the guy braked and pulled over; the police car pulled up and stopped right behind.
An angry police-officer walked up to the frightened man's rolled-down window
and asked, "Are you crazy, or what?
Don't you know at what speeds you were traveling at?"
The man sheepishly said, "Yes, officer."
Then why did you try to race away from me?" The officer angrily demanded to know.
"Well, officer," he said, "My wife
ran off with a policeman, six months ago, and I thought you were returning her."
