The piece is very human and fairly well done - yet It seems like they picked someone who lost a lot of folks to friendly fire, probably hoping to portray the Special Forces as the next generation of Vietnam Vets, awaiting to go berserk or snap into a crying jag...ready to confide in a journalist and condemn the military and the war. My bet is they went into this piece with an agenda - break down a special forces soldier and write about it. If that fails, portray them as cavalier killers who are numb to killing.
I'd love to talk to the soldier and find out how much of the interview - and what key parts - were edited out.
The NY Times has shown it is certainly not the friend of the war, the President or the Special Forces soldier.
