REAL ice cream. The kind you have to pry out of a frozen brick of ice cream with real soda jerk muscles. When you dump that scoop in the root beer it maintains its integrity, floats there nicely for half an hour, and develops a delicious crust of frozen root beer that adds to the flavor when you scoop the ice cream out with a spoon. Just enough--not too much--melts into the root beer to enhance the flavor.
Most root beer floats you get now at food joints use soft serve, an abomination that gives you root beer flavored snot after about two minutes. Soft serve is for cones. Keep it out of my floats.
Maybe I can get that jackass senator who is trying to get the Federal government to label dangerous candy to pass a law against soft-serve floats?
