Political parties exists to win elections. You can win elections by only appealling to the "rich" in general (a term that is seldom defined), corporate interests, and "big oil." Unless you're in charge of a Democrat machine like in Chicago where votes can be created out of thin air, you have to get people to believe in your agenda and vote for you.

Starving old people won't win votes. Starving children won't win votes. Trashing the environment won't win votes.

As for liberals, they very well do like infringing on the civil liberties of others. They just get upset when the same thing happens to them.

Speech codes? That's a liberal's restriction on freedom of speech.

Think freedom of association is a good thing? Try having an all men's (or all white) association and see what kind of stink gets dumped on you. All female or all racial minority organizations are fine, though.

Freedom of religion? Only so long as your beliefs are in line with liberal orthodoxy, otherwise you'll be demonized as part of the "Religious Right". Funny how Jesse Jackson and his associates can go to churches to hold political fundraisers (in clear violation of federal law) and that's okay, but let some conservative express his religious values and you'll see all sorts of condemnation.
