One thing I've enjoyed for much of my adult life is watching political conservatives who regard themselves as better Americans than anyone bitch about taxes and the draft or other service.
If they had their way, these "patriotic" Americans would not pay taxes nor would they bodily defend their country. And they consider themselves "better" than others.
Go figure.
"Universal service" is a great idea, sort of learning one is a part of something bigger than their own narrow, selfish, self-absorbed egos.
Make friends, feel useful, and learn to contribute rather than take.
Kennedy stated the anthesis of a political conservatives credo when he said, "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country."

Universal service would be great.
