Yes, prop roar is the sweetest and it's probably what lures me to the air races. Nothing like the sound of a mix of modified P-51's and Bearcats flying low full throttle. I haven't been in a while but all this talk on noise is making me itchy.
Speaking of airplane noise, ever hear a Veri-easy (not sure of exact spelling). It would scare me thinking of the poor pilot flying it when I found out he had a Volkswagen engine for a power plant. The first thing I asked after hearing it was, what kind of engine is that. It was a home built project plane, a pusher that sounded ugly and landed fast. I don't think it could stall if it tried, only drop like a rock. The last and only time I saw one was in 1982.
I was awarded an annual road maintenance contract (for 4 different years) for the military bases in the San Francisco area before they closed them and my favorite was the Navy base in Alameda. I was able to get in close and every chance I'd get I would head for the runway and once f-14's took off in a diamond formation and the noise gave me goose bumps down to my toes.
I miss all that,
SteveS
