And yet...

The same could be said of Eisenhower's experiences, and yet there's no disputing that he was similarly critical and cautionary in his farewell speech. Ike was in the belly of the beast, and knew whereof he spoke. Why is it impossible that Lincoln could have had the same epiphany?

I researched the Lincoln quote a while back, and discovered that it isn't just floating around in a vacuum. I found references that backed it up with documentation--it's alleged to have been written in a letter to a Colonel Somebody-or-Other, which letter was entered into evidence. Granted, the letter itself could be a fabrication, but as I said, the quote doesn't stand alone.

I'm not entirely convinced the Lincoln quote is bogus. Revisionist history consists not only of making stuff up, but also of discrediting and disappearing inconvenient historical realities.

The jury's still out, in my estimation.
