Brosz's Law: every bloody nickel kept out of the hands of government is a plus for the economy. I will concede that having to collect sales taxes is not helpful to businesses stuck in states that tax the crap out of them (like mine), but pulling other businesses into the lava pit isn't going to help anyone but the politicians.
I don't make any of my local/online purchase decisions based on sales taxes. There are a lot of other factors that come higher on the list. Maybe I'm odd, maybe not. Usually, the main factor is that I can find something easily online that I would have to wear out a lot of shoe leather or burn a lot of gasoline to find locally. This also means that if an online seller did collect taxes, it would probably not affect my decision to purchase online instead of locally either, so there it is.
