It happens every time a liberal starts throwing around labels like "Nazi", "warmonger", "bigot", and "homophobe" when describing conservatives. Liberals like to describe how they're compassionate, yet they're among the most arrogant people around.
In times like these, passions can easily get inflamed. All too often, both sides engage in flinging labels at one another. Someone who, however misguidedly, protests against the war is not be traitorous. A handful of people have spoken of taking direct action to interfere with the military when the war breaks out. Some, including some legal experts, argue that would be giving "aid and comfort to the enemy", which is the constitutional definition of treason. Not that it would come to that, but the definition might fit that small number of people.
While I don't have the exact post where I made the trench knife reference, I'm resonably certain I said "verbal", as in a severe flame. At no time did I ever threaten physical violence against anyone on this BBS.
As for the original joke, rampant anti-American hostility is all over Europe right now. Do you or they honestly believe that we're just going to take their abuse without replying in kind? At least this was with a degree of humor.
