If off-topic, so be it. I'm spreading this around.

I urge everyone to read the actual report. It is available in several formats. It makes no recommendations, and beyond stating that warming is occurring, makes no solid statement that human activity is the cause. The gist of the report is that they don't know why the climate is changing, they're not sure how much it is changing, and they can't predict how much it will change. One direct quote:

"Because of the large and still uncertain level of natural variability inherent in the climate record and the uncertainties in the time histories of the various forcing agents (and particularly aerosols), a causal linkage between the buildup of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and the observed climate changes during the 20th century cannot be unequivocally established. The fact that the magnitude of the observed warming is large in comparison to natural variability as simulated in climate models is suggestive of such a linkage, but it does not constitute proof of one because the model simulations could be deficient in natural variability on the decadal to century time scale."

To their credit, unlike the group that did the arsenic report, they do not take this nebulous set of information and demand that action be taken.

Like the arsenic report, the scientists do recommend that large, expensive research projects be done to find out exactly what's going on, but that's not too surprising.

Also a must-read is the foreword by Bruce Alberts, President of the National Academy of Sciences, which seems to me to be a reasonable assessment of the limitations on making drastic policy based on current science.

In the next few weeks, you will be hearing screaming from the environmentalists and the left, who either will not read this, or will read it and then lie. They will be screaming that the smoking gun has been found, that the United States is guilty, and that Bush, by rejecting Kyoto, is a war criminal. The press will not read this report either, but will rely on the interpretations given to them on a silver platter--primarily by those who have the goal of forcing Western technological civilization to commit suicide so that the socialist third world can feast on the carcass.

While you are listening to the screaming, read this report. Print it out. Use a highlighter on it. See for yourself if it says what they will be telling you.
