That's a pretty blunt instrument you suggest, Justin. Turning off scripting disables all the legitimate interactive feature of a Web site, too. Closely analogous to disconnecting your phone to avoid telemarketers.
The only effective way to avoid the problem without throwing the baby out with the bathwater is to patronize only sites like www.HabitableZone.com that have the ethical cojones to refuse banner ads. Add that site to IE's list of trusted sites, turn on all the options, and I'll take you on a magic carpet ride!
(Cough...ahem...well, of course, to the extent that I can act as your technical advisor..;-)...it's your site! Sorry, I get carried away drooling over the amazing things I could do with a site if I could be sure that everybody was using a decent browser.)
BTW, you catch the post about Netscrape finally releasing its dead grasp on the lowest-common-denominator of Web technology? (Tortured way of saying that they're getting out of browsers, finally.) Could be bad for Linux, with Microsoft understandably not porting IE to it; but then I remember that Nagivator 6 is really the open-source Mozilla browser. So why haven't the open-source Linuxoids done the perfectly natural thing and bring up Mozilla for Linux?

Cutting off your hand cures a hangnail, too!
