Synthetic alternative

Even if all the oil runs out (which it won't in a hurry), it may still be easier and safer to use our existing kerosene-burning engines and non-cryogenic fuel tanks and simply cook up synthetic kerosene.

The industrial plant for this is simple, exists now, and can supply kerosene at the equivalent of US$40-50 per barrel. New Zealand gets over 50% of its domestic gasoline from synthetic fuel plants.

Feedstock is Methane (natural gas) of which there is about 300 years supply in the world. Even if this runs out, you simply react hydrogen gas (from electrolysis of water) with any carbon-containing compound at high temperature. If all the coal and trees run out, you can substitute environmentalists as the carbon fraction. :-)
