In the 60's leaders had means to persuade the people that it was the righ thing to do (like going to the Moon).
Now, individualism prevails (together with greed) and with it, a distrust towards authorities. Also, there is a huge emphasis towards safety, fairness (job requirements towards minorities) and....there is no (cold) war anymore.
I think we'll have to wait until someone has a workable idea. There are plenty of people with ideas. If only one was good, it would be enough.
