ALH84001 was a totally uninteresting rock until someone figured it was a meteorite....Then later, someone else figured it came from Mars....Then, still later, someone discovered strange shapes and alerted the world. As a result, meteorites from Mars became priceless.
Sometimes, a rock has a strange fate, but, agreed, it 's not every day that it happens. But the more we know about rocks, the more "strange stuff" they might teach us.
