Some have long been using the technique of identifying only those who agree with their opinions as being "real", whether it be scientists, journalists, or others. This general de-humanization is usually accompanied by extremely vicious personal attacks as well.

I think that you have to ask yourself the question as to why they respond with attacks, and why they do not just respond to the facts or analysis. The only explanation possible is that their facts or analysis are too weak to hold up to much scrutiny.
