Hi Peter,
I have no psychological problems with rivers on mars. As a matter of fact, I would love to have in my possession some of the as yet restricted images demonstrating the various seasonal changes!
You know, in 1918 in the book of Knowledge the scientific community has already described the previously existing water oceans on mars and even noted the continents are all pointed south, as on the earth.
All this hoopla over what has been a 'given' for nearly a century!
Your post implies you expect a lot of resistance from folks when discussing Mars' water - and not rational resistance but rather 'psychological' - or that they can't deal with it mentally.
I think you will find that people have lots of problems with Mars. Its almost identical rotation with the earth and other coincidences inspire curiousity and the long history of contemplated canals and civilizations may be generating a 'backlash' against the whole concept.
Some people may indeed have a psychological need for Mars to be dry, lifeless and waterless.
Others likely have a psychological need to see the canals and the picturesque cities which captured our forefathers imagination.
I would say one is rooted in a need to abolish and destroy the past and the other is rooted in a need to uphold and defend it.
Freud might say the naysayers had bad issues with mommy and daddy while the water-supporters might have had an Oedipus complex ;-)
Interesting post though. If you have any pre-published materials or access to those crucial images I sure would love to take a peek...confidentiality assured.
Best wishes,
SDAI-Tech1
