Why can't the crew be increased even without a crew escape system?
We send men on submarines without a crew escape system.
We fly on planes without parachutes for all passengers.
Why must there be an emergency evacuation system for the space station when there is no such system for the shuttle itself?
I think the agrument against making the crew 6 instead of 3 until there is a crew recovery vehicle is a false argument designed to get congress to anti-up more money.
I hate to ask the question but: If space is really so dangerous that there are no alternatives to a complete evacuation of the station in the event of an emergency, then is space to dangerous for humans?
Please realize that I am pro-space; but, I can't believe that EVERYTHING must be made fail-safe with complete back-up systems. Surly there must be alternatives available to a station crew short of total evacuation should space debris or a fire, etc... comprimise the station's hull. I think it is overkill to put the whole program on hold. Unfortunatly, it appears to me that overkill is standard NASA operating proceedure.
