I never meant to imply he was a racist.
I was just refering to a period (1958-1964) when there was no bureaucracy (as Kraft mentions in his book "Flight"), when all astronauts were coming from a very small section of the population, when the NASA people had to learn everything from scratch.
That's what I felt he meant by "basics" (as, during that time, the budget was much lower ).
But what does he really mean by that, then?
