IMHO the paper should NOT have been published... But apparently theeditors of SCIENCE disagree with me on that point, so what do I know?
What the authors did was the following:
1) They took Acetone and chilled it to 0 degrees Centigrade...(Why not colder than that you ask? well the authors claim they did not have the equipment to chill it further... This rang alarm bells- the best they could scrounge up was a bucket of ICE for temp control?!)
2) They did the experiments with Regular Acetone and Acetone that had all of the hydrogen replaced with deuterium...(This is good, a controlled experiment...)
3) They nucleated small ~100nm dia bubbles in the Acetone by zapping it with a pulse of 14MeV neutrons...(This rang alarm bells since they conclude they had fusion based on only 2 things- 1)Tritium was detected 2) so were neutrons - the problem is that they were introducing neutrons and when you bombard deuterium with neutrons you can create tritium! Thus, they do their experiment on regular and heavy acetone and the neutrons can only create tritium with the deuterated acetone- they interpret tritium as proof of fusion...)
4) They did a control experiment to address my gripe in 3) above- they took heavy acetone and bombarded it with the neutrons, but this time did not apply the pressure waves to drive the sonolumenescence they claim is creating fusion...they then tested it for tritium and found none- they conclude that that indicated all the tritium detected when the pressure waves are applied was due to the sonolumenescence driven fusion...Problem is that several researchers have said that with their neutron bombardment the SHOULD have detected tritium in their control sample! This brings into question their testing methodology...
5) After ORNL gave them the ok to publish they requested another group verify their claims... this other group brought in their own neutron detector and used it on the authors apparatus...and found no neutrons- at this point the authors should have stopped the paper and figured out why there was a disagreement!!! Instead they publish anyway...
6) A VERY big problem I have is they apparently made no attempt to look for helium!!!
That is the FIRST thing I would have done!!! Showing helium production would rule out any questioning of their results on the basis that they were creating the tritium and neutrons simply because they were bombarding their samples with neutrons...
If they had found Helium production, then I might take them seriously- but as it is it sounds like overeager researchers doing a half assed job... I am surprised it was accepted for publication...
