Be careful of the terminology. (EDITED FOR CORRECTION)

EDIT: I was misusing "progressive" in this post. The word I was looking for to represent something like a flat percentage tax is "proportional."

"Progressive" means someone with more income pays more taxes.

Even a flat tax is progressive. You make ten times the money, you pay ten times the taxes.

The word "fair" is being abused, too. "Fair" as used by liberals means "tax the shit out of people who won't vote us into office anyway, and pass the loot to the people who will." You can buy a lot of votes on the loot from one billionaire.

"Fair share" is never quantified. If the Democrats put a number on it, they're dead. But it will always be more than whatever is being paid now. Always.

I think we all know that someone who pays $6 million in taxes is not getting a thousand times more government benefits and services than someone who pays $6000.

Is that "fair?"

As you point out, A truly "fair" tax would be dividing the government's expenses evenly by the number of taxpayers. How's that look? Not too good. In point of fact, the bill would be more like $35,000 per taxpayer, not $5,000. This is obviously impossible, but it does give a lot of us pause to think about who else is paying our "fair share" for those of us who are paying less than that. Or at least it should.

"You have more than you need. I need it more than you do. So I get to take it from you."

That's a hell of a moral code to run a nation on.
