Compressed air
In the search for flywheel storage I came across a paragraph on using an underground cavern to store compressed air during the off- peak hours of a Hydro(?) powerplant. The air would then be used to spin turbines during high use hours. (Seems like modern switching would cover the same thing? Don't utilities sell excess power?)
I think Phil brought up the use of flywheels for use on mars.
